IIRC, the G8 is going to have front/side and side curtain airbags along with stability control (with a BIG OFF button I hope). I don't know if it's going to be standard or optional, and I don't really care. I just like the fact they will be offered.

Does anyone think the Camaro is going to have these safety features? I like both of these cars and safety equipment and good crash test scores are a big part of my buying decisions. Thanks.

Nice site btw. :roxor:

Welcome to the site:hello:

I believe those things are required per US laws now. I know for sure stability control is required. I think the air bags are too.

Oh Onstar will be standard on all GM vehicles too.

Welcome to the forums.

As for your question, I would hope so. The US standards are little higher since the 4th gen. These feature will help this car get good reviews from the nutswinging magazines (Ill like to be the first to tell you; never trust a magazine), but good reviews will influence the general public. I like to see this car out sell the other cars in its class. I have no doubt GM has a good product on in its hands, but good marketing, safety, options, and diversity never hurt no one. GM has to please us (performance and hobbyist community), the average joe, the soccer mom who wants to feel cool, the ditsy college chick, and even try to school the ricers with a good entry level V6.

Don't trust consumer reports's "expert" opinions, either. They give trucks a low rating because..well..they're trucks. I'd be surprised if they give the camaro over a 50..because it's American and they don't like that.
They gave the Jeep Wrangler an insanely low score because it doesn't ride well on the road...well...duh.
Below 10,000lbs, eh? So is THAT why Chrysler keeps making their vehicles heavier and heavier, in the hope that one day they have a car weighing over 10,000lbs and won't have to put stability control on it?

And here is the airbag law:

http://www.forbes.com/feeds/ap/2007/09/05/ap4084261.html

Under the government's plan, automakers will be required to phase-in the head protection in 20 percent of passenger vehicles in the 2010 model year, 50 percent by the 2011 model year, 75 percent in 2012 vehicles and in all passenger vehicles for 2013 models. All new passenger vehicles will need to comply by September 2012.

The auto industry has voluntarily agreed to install side air bags in all new passenger vehicles by September 2009 and the safety equipment, including air bags that provide more protection in rollover accidents, is becoming more widely available.

The new rules do not require specific types of technologies to meet the new standards, but automakers will likely use side curtain air bags and air bags that protect the chest and abdomen. About 47 percent of 2008 model year vehicles already have the combination of side curtain air bags and side air bags that protect the torso, NHTSA said.

Jeremy Clarkson can suck my *****. I already can hear his british jibba jabba on how crappy the car handles, how heavy it is, how outdated the car is, how "primitive" the car is, and bash on thing american's love the most in their cars. Dont even get me started on Mr. Clarkson. Clarkson and the guy at Dodge who made the Charger a 4 door sedan, are the two people I would kick in the balls to finally get some closure in life.

Hell, it surprised me that he gave the C6 Z06 a good review. I think he had to, the car is too **** good and every knows it. But even the magazine had to find something wrong with it......... the interior. For god sakes, the camaro, corvette, and G8 will prolly have better crap and standard than a VW before its is over with. Sorry to go on a rant in your first thread, I just love my cars. I have high hope for the 5th gen.

Yeah, Camaro will definitely have all of the latest safety features.
They will not stop short of a 5-star crash rating, can't afford to do anything less. :)

That said, I too want a big OFF button for traction control.
And make it a REAL OFF BUTTON, so that it's really all the way turned off when you want it off.

I'm not a fan of the side airbags or head airbags. You're suppost to sit all straight and perfect when they go off....I hardly ever drive sitting straight up. I either lean against the door...or lean against the armrest.

They gave the Cobalt SS a 72...2 of the things rated excellent..the 2 other rated as good. Real-world fuel economy...they must have ran it on 87 to get bad fuel economy. 25/35 is awesome. They gave the LS sedan a 49. Goes to show they don't know a good vehicle when it is sitting right infront of them. The Jeep Wrangler got a 17.

And this really pisses me off, they give the new Silverado a 65. "Real world fuel economy" is rated at poor. Wtf, it has the highest gas mileage of any real truck on the road! The only lows they have is braking and turning circle..and they give it a 65. Total morons.
*end rant*

Thanks for all the replies!! This forum is ACTIVE, unlike some other ones I’ve seen. ;) I should have known on the side air bags and stability control. I’ve seen those articles before. I guess I wanted to hear other prospective buyers say it too. Not that I am a Mustang fan, but I was surprised Ford didn’t include curtain airbags on their latest redesign. Watching those IIHS crash tests really shows how those head airbags protect you in a side impact.

I haven’t had a GM vehicle since I donated my ’87 Grand AM SE with about 230K miles to charity in 2001 (needed an engine rebuild). After seeing the concept years back and most recently the Transformers movie (yeah, I know it was a GTO underneath), I don’t know who is more excited about this car, me or my 4 year old son. :D If I get one, I wonder if he will still want it to look like Bumblebee.

Yes and a off button for stability control too.
"Fully" off, is my vote as well. A lot of systems nowadays allow you to turn it off, but it's still there. You can't autocross a car with a Nanny on the engine and brakes, and if you can't autocross it, I don't want it.

Have the "fully off" button or hell, get a tuner and program it yourself as well. I am sure the computer will have a ton of Torque management that would definitely need to be shut off anyways to help with getting more power. TQ Management goes all the way to shutting down injectors when the computer senses knock retard . Can you say major lean condition and popped pistons!? You wont have to worry about that if you stay stock though, which I do not:rotflmao::roxor:.

@Jinx: Dude, did you ever really watch Top Gear? Clarkson keeps saying Americans can't make cars, yet he's praised Ford Mondeo, Ford Transit, Ford Focus ST, and even owns a Ford GT. Oh wait...that's why you're pissed off. :rotflmao:

Seriously, Clarkson knows his cars. Keep in mind the cars he's reviewed and the fact that he's in England, which means he reviews Euro-market cars. When he, Hammond, and May came to the states in one of the episodes, he really liked a 3rd-gen Camaro. If I remember correctly, he's also given the Cadillac CTS-V a favorable review.

And yes, he gave the Z06 a good review. Acually, it was an excellent one. He called it even with a Ferrari 575, which is a fairly big deal.

Honestly, I find it much weirder that he talks so much smack about Porsches.

One episode I saw of it they compared a Cadillac with an Aussie car and then a British car. The british car BARELY beat the cadillac in their review..but then again..it was also $20,000 more. Goes to show the only way they can beat an american car is with one substantially more expensive. :p

My beef with Clarkson is that he misses the point of the american car. Handling is good and all, but if the car's focus was something then he should test it as such. The Z06 is a good car and it took a lot of work to make a masterpiece like that for the price (when a comparable car cost closer to 100k)

As for Top Gear, its one of those shows I watch to see a general review for exotics and foreign cars that dont make it to the states. The only reviews on american cars that I agreed with was GT500 vs. Roush Stage 3, Z06, and the GT. But the CTS-V review deserved a better review.
