...and we were all talking about purchasing a 1990 IROC-Z. Which would you spring for?

5.7 L98 245hp/345tq
700R4 (the only choice with that engine; with 3.23 gearing)

or

5.0 LB9 230hp/300tq
T5 (with G92 3.42 gearing)

Do you want to say you've got the "big" engine in your Camaro, or do you want to row your own gears and not be any slower than the "mighty" 5.7?

I'd choose the 305/5 speed combo. Make mine red with black interior. :D

I chose the 305 as well.

I had a 92 with a 305 and WC T-5 an I loved it!

I will never own an IROC though. I don't like mullets! :)

I have not driven the 1990 IROC 350 or 305 but I have driven both 305 RS and 350 Z on the 1992 model. 305 5 speed is slow and powerless. The 350 Z28 was a pretty quick car. A helluva lot faster than the 305

So I chose the AUTO, based on that comparison

Honestly if it were 1989 I'd be pretty upset about the state of automotive design and power, and definitely looking for something built in the 60's.

Im not criticizing design on the appearance stand point. Performance though could have been better. IMO At least it would have been better if the performance was a little better.

I agree performance wise, I think we would see a lot more 80s cars on the roads if performance was better. They should of just gave us bigger engines with detunings so later on we could really open them up.

Chevy could of put the Corvette L98 in their fbody (Better Heads).
Chevy could of did a SS Thirdgen - 350 TPI with manual tranny or just a Corvetter L98 with an automatic.

Pontiac could of had a RAM AIR option, they could of continued and improved their turbo fbodies. (Remember the second gen turbo bird? Only 210hp!)

Ford could of brought out a Fox Boss 302 - A 302 with H/C/I.

I stick by what I said, performance and styling were not exciting in the 80's, early 90's.

I didnt mind the body styling of the RS package, I actually like the 3rd Verts better than any Camaro Vert ........ I think they look better......... 4th Gens & 1st Gens werent bad. I do like the 3rd Gen Vert best still. JMO

Body wise the 1st Gen is my favorite.....except the Vert. Performance wise 60's was by far the best. However, technology has came a long way. I do prefer a carb'd 427 BBC as to a LSx or any newer engines. NOT putting them down........just preference! JMO again

The 305 in the RS you drove is 60hp down from the 5.0 in the Z28. Not even close.

I've never driven a TPI 305/5 speed combo, so I can't compare. I've owned two L98 cars (only because the LB9/T5/G92 combo isn't easy to find), and they were ok for what they were, but I would have liked to have compared them.

None the less, IMO, it'll be a lot easier to swap in a larger engine in place of that 305 than it would be to do the transmission conversion.
