Now that the LS3 is offical for the 08 vette, will it be the standard V8 option for the camaro a la z28 or will it be offered as a high performance version a la SS?

Who says the high performance version is going to be the SS? ;)
(That topic is for another thread.)

If history is a lesson (as with the L98, LT1 and LS1 engines) then the LS3 should find its way into Camaro, though it may be rated with less horsepower.

I would be a fan of that choice, the LS3 is a nice engine.
However there is also the L76, which is a 6.0L AFM GenIV, 362hp in the Pontiac G8 GT, which is also a Zeta car.

L76 has AFM, LS2 does not.
LS2 heads are similar to LS6 heads.
L76 heads are similar to L92 heads (better flowing).
L76/L92 intake flows better than the LS1/6 intake.
That's all I know at this point.

Why the less HP, not sure, perhaps a smaller cam and more restrictive exhuast?
This same L76 is rated 366hp/380tq in the full-size trucks.
Truck engines usually have smaller cams, so that kinda makes sense.

Then there's the L98 which is used in the Holden Commodore in Australia.
Same as the L76, except without AFM, and also rated 362hp.

From what I've been told, the top engine for the 2009 Camaro will be whatever the base engine for the Vette is at that time. Soooo, it looks like we are staring down the hood of a 430 hp musclecar from the General. It should be a rocket or missle. I'm not sure which is quicker.

So we could very well see the following:

base camaro = 3.8L @200hp (impala/gp) or 210hp (cadillac cts) or 3.6L VVT @ 240hp (buick lacrosse or pontiac g6 gtp ) or 255hp (cadillac CTS)

z28 = 6.0L L76 @ 362 hp from holden

SS = 6.2L LS3 @ 430 hp from our new vette.

that's my prediction

i remember hearing on speed channel that every corvette that has ever been dyno'd is withing the 500-506 HP range. which is pretty cool i think.

the 3.8L is on it's way out.. if anything it'll be a 3.9l @ 240hp.

based on some comments from fbodfather i think the 3.6L w/DI will be an option, so that's 300hp

i honestly think the base v8 is gonna be the LS3 and a couple years down the road we'll get something even better

The stang will supposedly have a performance boost by then plus the challenger will also have a 400+ hp version. Lutz and the Fbodfather already said they are shooting for better performance than both so I see a detuned LS3 as the base V8 model with something else (a la 550 s/c rumored Z28)for the high end whatever it is called.

i see no less than 400hp. Because if it's less, im sure there will be plenty of people looking for some slightly used Goats or even look into becoming a Mopar.

My predictions have been made before.
3.9 VVT V6 @ 240
5.(1-5) LSx/L based @ 320-340
6.2 LS3 @ 400
LS7/LS9 @ 505/550+

All with AFM for mileage and 6M/6A options for transmissions.
